nikon 200-400mm f4

Photographing the moon can be tricky. Last year I had a go at it and was a complete disaster with the moon the appearance of a large mass blurred bright in the sky. After a little trial and error I discovered how to take pictures of Nice on the moon. Please see the two examples at right.
The right lens
The first thing you need is a powerful zoom. The moon may look great in the night sky, but when the camera takes a picture of her, the moon, only fill a small portion of the photo. In a 50mm lens of the moon be no more than a point in the image. The lens I used on the front photos were taken on a Canon lens 100-400mm it was much better, but to be honest even a longer zoom would have been better.
Save constant
The next thing 100% is needed is a tripod. Camera Maintenance remains essential to achieve a sharp image, and if your using a long zoom lens camera movement be a problem as it is the longest zoom camera shake affecting the image more. The tripod held the goal and still allow you to have a clear image. You also need to use any of the cameras timer function or a cable release to trigger the camera shutter … otherwise, it can shake the camera to take the blurry picture and get results.
Aperture
F-number/aperture What should you use? The first thing that comes to mind is a saying, low F-number F4.0 or below for more light. This is where I went wrong – the moon is actually very bright in the sky and a low number f completely may blow the moon and make it look more like the sun. The ideal of F-number would be somewhere between F11 and F16.
Shutter speed
The shutter speed to back it would take a slow, but again this is the opposite. Since the moon is shining you do not need much time to capture the light that follows. Also the moon actually moves quite fast along the sky at night – if you have a lens of 400 mm or more, you can actually see the moon moves slowly through the viewfinder. If you use a slow shutter speed, the actual motion of the moon might make us lose detail. Therefore, I recommend a speed about 1 / 125 – 1 / 250.
ISO speed would be around 200-400 and then just experiment with different combinations of ISO, aperture and shutter speed with previous guidance, to achieve a beautiful exposure of the moon. Experiment may also be necessary if the moon is showing different amounts depending on the time of the month.
Cropping
Once you have your perfect shot is loaded on your computer. Even in a 400 mm lens the moon can still take up a relatively small area of the photo. If you get the lay of the land and got a very strong picture of the moon, then you can crop the image and even expand a little as the moon itself fits better in the final preparation of your photo.
Conclusion
- Use a long zoom lens.
- Always use a tripod and shutter release cable or trigger.
- Do not use a low F-number.
- Do not use a slow shutter speed.
