The Nikon 55-200mm is perfectly compatible with your Nikon D40, because the lens is a set S with built-in autofocus motor. I would like recommend the Nikon 55-200mm VR only about $ 50 more. The VR (vibration reduction) feature actually holds the camera and virtually eliminates the a tripod. I have a love of the 18-200mm VR, which gave me wonderful images during a trip through China this summer.
