Advantage 72mm filter size in a 52mm size filter on a SLR lens?

I'm asking specifically in connection with the 18-200 VR Nikon. OK I have to clarify my question. Is there any advantage of having a lens with a diameter of 72mm lens on a 52mm diameter. I'm not asking for the filters. The diameter of the opening in the front of the lens is called the filter size lens.

If I understand your question correctly, you are asking what the advantage of a large barrel len lens barrel to a close? If this is the question then, the larger lens barrel will give more light exposure if the f / stop is around f/2.8 – f/3.5. Faster more light lens, the lens barrel to close. In some cases, will even give you wide angle capabilities. The dark side is more expensive lenses and filters are also expensive.
