Zoom vs. Objectives for the first Landscape Photography.?

By making the landscape photography that you think is better and why? In the range 12-24mm lens. (12-24 to be the zoom while 24 from a landline) .. Some things to consider .. pictures will be taken at any time of day, including night. Both are very angular. Most images will be photographs of landscapes both large and some narrow angles. (I have a Nikon D80 and also if this does that any difference between the options) Thanks a lot in advance.

My choice would be 12-24mm zoom factor of 1.5 due to "crop" sensor Nikon. 12mm therefore becomes an equivalent of 18mm, while 24mm becomes a 36mm equivalent. Obviously 18mm will give you plenty of coverage. Here are my tips for good landscape photography: 1) Use a tripod. This allows you to keep the camera perfectly level. 2) Use the highest resolution camera adjustment. 3) Use ISO 100 or less. 4) Use aperture priority. 5) Use F16. With the camera on a tripod, shutter speed camera is selected irrelevant unless its a windy day. 6) Using a remote control or the self timer to trigger the camera shutter. Why I suggest F16? Check a look at the depth of field (DOF) with a 12mm objective focused on 5 'to f16 to go to http://www.dofmaster.com/dofjs.html where you'll find a handy calculator DOF that can be used to calculate the DOF for any combination of focal length, subject distance and f-stop imaginable, on the basis of the camera. There is also an informative article on DOF. 12mm @ F16 centered at 5 'DOF is 1'-2 "to infinity. So everything from 3'-10''delante of their attachment to the extent that you can see (infinite) will be in focus. I used the FotoSharp (http://www.fotosharp.com) Day and Night Guide to years of exposure taking night shots without flash. Here are some examples: Scene 45 minutes after sunset, indoor sports, circus – lighting, corners lit streets ISO 100 f5.6 1 / 4 sec. F8 @ 1 / 2 sec. F11 @ 1 sec. F16 @ 2 seconds. Floodlit buildings, fountains, Christmas lights outdoor light near candle-ups ISO 100 f2.8 @ 1 / 2 sec. F4 @ 1 sec. f5.6 @ 2 sec. F8 @ 4 sec. F11 @ 8 sec. f16 @ 15 sec. City skyline in distance ISO 100 f5.6 @ 15 sec. F8 @ 30 sec. F11 @ 1 min. F16 @ 2 min. As you can see easily that there is no need to use a high ISO or a large f-stop (f1.4, f1.8) for night landscape / scenic photography. If the tripod does not have a level you can do yourself. Just find an old (dead) flash drive and remove the foot (the part that slides into the shoe of the camera). Ensure that any metal that can connect with the shoe removed. Now, buy a "level of the table" and a tube of super glue on your hardware local. Paste the level of the plate to the top of the foot flash save, slide in the caliper and you can always have a level camera. If memory I spent about $ 4.00 to do mine. (Level of plate "is generally round with a circle in the center. Just get the bubble in the circle and the camera is level). Of course you can always spend $ 35 to $ 40 for a level, but I'd rather have the extra money for other things.
