sigma 150-500mm lens

A new bird photography lens?

W/18-55mm I have a Nikon D40x + Sigma 70-300m. I am looking for a telephoto zoom to upgrade to the photograph of birds. I had the 70-300mm for a year and more than 200 mm that is a little softer, it was also loking to get to something else. I considered the Sigma APO 150-500mm OS. This objective would be great, but do not know how slow opening would affect my photos. I also consider the Sigma 70-200mm 2.8 or Nikon 70-200mm 2.8 VR. If baught one of these could then use a TC for extra reach when needed. I would appreciate any suggestions. Thanks Ben Hutchinson

The focal lengths longer need to use a tripod. I use a Nikkor 18-200 and 70-300 and after talking with the natural history and sports specialists who would be seeking a fixed focal length, f2.8 ideally around at least 500 mm from the lens, so that certainly could use a good first converter.A objective 2X zoom would be better in this area. These would give a 750mm and 1500mm equivalent Nikkors work.In for this range is expensive, what can be considered as either a Sigma or Tamron, unless it could choose a second hand Nikkor. earthboundlight is a website for Nikon Natural History and has lots of good links for compatibility with your model.
