Should I buy a Nikon VR 70-300mm F4.5-5.6G ED-IF AF-S or a Sigma APO 70-200mm F2.8 for a fashion show?

I am a photographer and I've been hired to record a fashion show, I've never done before. I was told that the models will be slow moving – moderate. The Nikon lens is $ 539.99 and the Sigma is $ 799. Will need to spend extra money just to get the f2.8 maximum? I have a Nikon D90

For photos of the track, the VR will not help at all, unless of course you have lots of practice and a steady hand with panning shots. What you need is shutter speed. If you are at any distance, to be 70-300 at 5.6 in the Sigma will remain at 2.8. All else being equal, the Sigma will give 2 stops faster shutter, and you need everything you can to prevent subject motion blur. Objectives VR can not compensate for that anyway. You may be able to put together a Nikon 80-200 f/2.8 with a similar price to the Sigma, not an objective well stabilized, but at least Nikon is said on the side of those who care about these things.
