Among all these students, one (call him Pat) is chosen at random and let X = number of people on the bus Pat. Search (2 decimals) var (X). This is what I tried do. I said the probability that Pat be on any given bus is 1 / 4. Then I said: X can take values of 24, 49, 24 and 54 (the number of people on the bus no pat). With this information I can find the average number of people is 37.75. Then apply the formula, sigma (1-4) (xi – mean) p (x). This is not going to give the correct answer (but I'm not sure what the correct answer is supposed to be).
