Helping photographers? – Lenses for outbreaks of concert?

Just buying a lens for a concert of outbreaks of a friend and could do with a little help. I'm using the Olympus E-510 and guessing in the 14-54mm 2.8-3.5 (?) Place of medium size, changing lighting, mouth kilometers Image away. Right / wrong decision? Opinions? Knowledge to pass on? Also, if anyone could utter the settings you had to use that would great, but I have to make sure I get the right lens first, obviously, lol. Thank you very much!

I have to agree with the previous answer except I think I could get away with f/2.8. Play around with time your shots with the light show. On the bright points, get your shots. I'm not familiar with the camera, but if you can detect meter, you can get some really cool pictures when the focus is on someone. Photometer and its surroundings will they black or nearly so.
