It is the Sigma 18-50mm F2.8 EX DC lens good? I know that Tamron is a similar but which is best?

I shot with a Canon 20D and am looking for a good, fast lens to shoot pictures of my new baby. I know it has a lens similar to Sigma Tamron one, but the Tamron was a bit too strong for me, while the approach.
